Many times functions get develop naturally. Power tussle define boundaries. There is no standard way to define function or power boundary. Then never ending game of consolidation and decentralization starts. Power hungry functional heads always tries to protect their boundaries.
More the functions are more inefficiency you build. Functions have more side effects over benefits. Benefit is defiantly ease of management. Side effects are
- Hamper Critical path: Process should flow freely. Sometimes, even for small modification/approval document goes to another kingdom. It waste energy and resource. Rounds of approvals and power blockages hamper governance. Let it flow freely. Delegate powers, so that document or transaction can flow without disruption.
- Talent hoarding: Even if they don’t need talent, they keep talent. Talent is like resource. It helps in tough time. Company may need that skill somewhere but kingdom may not relieve him. It can be wastage for resource and for company.
- Inefficiency: Some functional heads keep buffer of 10%, 30%, 50%.. and some work on day to day basis. As there may not be exact way to measure correct productivity, process stuck with manager working on less buffer. Functions hardly run on manager’s capability. It is their subordinates, that makes him king.
- Create comfort zones: Comfort zones or pockets are not good for company progress. Each function has to devote to get the transaction through. Some functions can’t just keep waiting. Success lies outside comfort zone or at boundary. Let people move. Identify bottleneck. Play with bottleneck. Shake it.
Keep process lean. Let’s keep functional structure smooth and simple. Customer first should be approach by everyone in organization.
